Lush Greensboro family session

When clients trust you to find the perfect night

This Greensboro family wins the award for the most flexible during spring session season (say that 10 times quickly). We had so many changes due to weather, location issues, etc., but they were so gracious and patient to get the perfect day/location. They trusted me to find the best window to shoot. And boy did we ever. It was a perfect evening with low humidity and a lovely warm sunset. And, one of my favorite fields was grown in enough from the annual haircut it gets each fall. Waiting a bit paid off.

Newbies to Greensboro still like myself, it was nice chatting about schools, things to do and restaurants we’ve discovered so far. I had a great time shooting their adorable boys who were so smilely and who warmed to me enough to show a belly (see farther down – tee hee). Naturally I thought it was hilarious, but his side eye below shows that mom had something else to say….such a little boy. He was also super helpful and identified a “bug” that had crawled into my bag. It turned out to be a huge spider, so the little guy did me a solid and kept me from finding it later as a surprise. That would not have been pretty. Dad to the rescue! Phew…

We could have probably shot one or more of our iffy nights, but they were willing to take my advice and hold out for a night we knew would be amazing. I’m glad we did. You never know what you’re going to get in the spring, but Mother Nature has served up some pretty nice days. 🙂

Miss T takes on Downtown GSO

I was so excited to shoot this senior session downtown this past fall. I spotted this wall over the summer on my way to get my hair done and nearly drove off the side of the road. Well that spot led me to a few more, and then I added to my list the night before with a scavenger hunt of sorts for more cool places to shoot. But this wall HAD to be first.

I met T and her mom in the graffiti wall parking lot on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon and we started our shootlpalooza. It was cold, but T was a super trooper, especially after she pulled a quick change into her dress. I LOVE photographing seniors. Sessions usually last about two hours and include a wardrobe change. It’s fun showcasing multiple looks of seniors and she looked terrific no matter where we were. We ended our session with coffee, tea and sweets from the little bakery at the end of the main drag. Seems only fair since we hogged their table and chairs out front of their adorable shop.

Lucky for me, my new town of Greensboro is overflowing with cool places to shoot. Honestly, if the sun hadn’t set we could have shot all night. (Hence this really long post with tons of photos.) Welcome to Greensboro indeed! Congrats T!

This tween is my spirit animal

Pretty much she’s me (or what I wanted to be), except Miss A is way cooler than I was at this age.

All of my favorite things are in this tween’s session. We started in her room where she showed me her ukulele (I’ve always wanted to play one), then we hung out in her treehouse and played with her dog. And THEN she turned into a softball star (I did manage that as a kid minus the star part). Besides melting in the God-awful humidity and being eaten alive by mosquitos….it was all worth it.

Seriously, Miss A had no problem being in front of the camera during this session. As a local theater kid, I barely had to do anything but click the shutter. Plus she’s just adorable. I think she was in the middle of rehearsal for an upcoming show at the time, so I was hoping to get a song, but I didn’t want to press my luck. 🙂  I mean I DID get a ukulele performance. And that was totally cool.

I’m sure you can tell, but I get a ton out of these sessions too

I love meeting new people, and since I have boys I especially love hanging out with the girls. It makes me feel like one of the guys gals since my house is chock full o’boys (including the cat). 😉

Anyway, I loved working with this tween and was super happy to do this for her as the only girl sandwiched between two brothers. It’s always cool to shoot for families like this as it’s something a little extra special for the girls. It’s okay to get special treatment sometimes, right?

What happens after the photo session?

Yes! Tween boys can be part of The Inside/Outside Project too. This one happens to be mine, but I’m showing it off so you can see the next phase of what follows the session…where the magic happens. 🙂

Once our photo session is over I take all the photos + the surveys filled out by family and friends and incorporate them into a video to tell their story. Each tween is so different and I love reading all the beautiful things noted about each child. It’s easy to say things out loud to kids in our daily lives. It’s unbelievably impactful when you can gather so many in one place. It becomes a personal devotional to each tween and a constant reminder of all the wonderful things that make them so special.

And that seems to be what gets parents and their tween the most. Seeing it all together. Parents don’t see what everyone else has written until all the photos, music and quotes are presented in video form first. (Tweens don’t even know this is happening until the big reveal — usually about two weeks after each session.)

It gets me Every. Single. Time.

While sometimes photo sessions can feel like they’re more suited for girls, I honestly think The Inside/Outside Project is/can be even more important to boys. Boys want to be tough, and if there’s anything going on in their lives the tendency may be to keep it inside. If they’re feeling insecure, maybe Mom and Dad are the last to know. And that’s what gets me so excited to shoot these sessions. All of those things parents say or want to say are right there for the tween to read and remember. Maybe it’s just another wonderful reminder for that tween how much they are loved, but maybe one day in the future it will be EXACTLY what they need to see on a very bad day we just haven’t imagined yet.

In the meantime, it makes me so happy to hear how much these photos and albums mean to each family. That’s why I do what I do. XO

Don’t forget to check out this quick video showcasing many of my 2016 Inside/Outside Tweens. You can also watch Jack’s reveal video here.

Miss K’s Inside/Outside Photo Shoot

This session was really special. Miss K’s mom contacted me early on and told me how much a shoot like this would mean to her oldest daughter. K had been through a lot in her 11 short years and gathering love and encouraging words from friends and family would be so powerful. I always want to do the best job I can for each and every tween, but I really wanted to get this right for Miss K. She was a little quiet at first, so before I even took my camera out we sat on her bed and she gave me tour of her room.

I know I’ve said this before, but I love watching each tween pull something off a shelf to show me or point out certain things in their room. Miss K is quite the artist and I really enjoyed looking at all her creations — from a paper mache mask to a doll she made herself and hugged during our session.

Once we finally started shooting, I watched her personality come to life. She told me jokes, I laughed. She made faces, I laughed. She told me about her school and her little sister, I listened. And, after reading through all the surveys her family and friends filled out, I understood how fiercely loved she is. Her mom says she’s an old soul. Her Nana says she cares deeply for friends and family. Her friends say she’s a fighter, friendly and caring.

I agree with all of them.

Towards the end of our session she really opened up. The last few in this post are my absolute favorite. Every time I clicked the camera, she moved to another pose. Whether it was a silly face or bringing out the diva, she was Work.InG.It! Her mom and I laughed and laughed. It was an absolute pleasure to photograph her.

Click here to learn more about The Inside/Outside Project, including how session fees are waived for this project. It’s a little bit of work up front, but I promise it’s worth it. For you and your tween.
